Neon Pigeon’s New Autumn Menu Offers Updated Japanese Classics
Neon Pigeon on Keong Saik Road has launched a new autumn menu, making a few tasty twists on the classic Japanese dishes. We headed down to sample a few bites – as well as a few of their innovative Japanese-inspired cocktails. This popular hotspot is known for their Izakaya-style, offering amazingly creative dishes to share. For their new autumn menu, this remains the same.
What’s new on the menu?
In total, there are 10 new dishes – in addition to the Neon Pigeon classics, such as the herb-crusted tuna tataki or the baby scallops with tomato seed ponzu, Japanese plum, and tobiko.
Sea bream Sashimi
The seabed is cured in tamari shoyu, giving it some texture and a savoury taste. Brushed with a green yuzu koshu oil, which is a blend of fermented chilli and flavoured with yuzu, it gives the dish a stronger flavour. Combined with a crisp green apple salad, it is a wonderfully light dish and an ideal starter to share.
Bamboo Shoot Tempura
The bamboo shoots come breaded with fresh Japanese breadcrumbs, also known as nama panko, giving it shoots some coarse texture. The bamboo shoots are topped with a black garlic mayonnaise.
As ramen is not only a popular choice, but also a very comforting one, it makes sense to have a noodle dish on the menu too. The tiger prawns are fried in shrimp oil made from shrimp shells and heads, giving it some rich prawn taste. This comes all with buckwheat soba, a cold soba sauce, Japanese mountain yam, freshly chopped obha leaves, and toasted buckwheat.
Roasted Tomahawk Steak
This gigantic steak is definitely to share. Presented to us before it was cooked, I was starting to get hesitant to eat anything else (it was really huge). The Australian Tomahawk steak comes with smooth homemade red miso butter, also brightened up by fresh lemon zest, and fresh herbs. The steak also is accompanied by a side dish – the crispy Wasabi Leaf Salad, which is served with adzuki beans, pickled rakkyo onions, and a fresh wasabi and carrot dressing.
The other new dishes are Tsukune meatballs, Charcoal grilled asparagus, and Crispy Pork Belly. We will be back for the Katsu Currywurst.
Also, don’t forget about the cocktails at Neon Pigeon.
